The Basics of Cleaning Your Engine

The engine is the heart of your car. Just like your heart though, it goes through a lot of hidden wear-and-tear that you wouldn't notice outright. Fortunately, unlike your heart, you can take it out and clean it up so that it functions like brand new. If you're planning to clean your car engine, here's a basic primer.

First, you'll want to buy some maintenance and cleaning items from an automotive supplies dealer; engine cleaners, degreasers, and other related items should be on your list. Next, remember to let your engine cool down for a day before taking it out. When you finally do take your engine out, remember to cover all of the intakes to ensure that your cleaning solutions and water don't go into places where they shouldn't. Now you're ready for some heavy-duty cleaning.

The first step is to degrease the engine; grease can get everywhere so carefully inspect every nook and cranny. After the grease is removed, you get to the main part of cleaning; use cleaning solutions to get all of the remaining dirt and grime out of your engine. Once that's done, let it dry. When the engine's dry, it's time to start waxing and placing protective layers. Finally, shine everything up and make sure that plug, cords, and other engine components are in their right place. You can be assured that if you've done it right, your engine will run like a dream.
